How many Newport residents visit the city’s central Post Office on Bridge Street?
More importantly, how many notice the white marble memorial tablet on the wall which commemorates the 40 Post Office workers who made the ultimate sacrifice and gave their lives in the First World War and beneath them the men who died in World War Two? The memorial, originally in the main Post Office on High Street, was unveiled in 1921 and shows the coats of arms of Newport, Monmouthshire and Brecknockshire, the areas in which the men worked. Often while standing in the Post Office queue we have wondered who these men were. Behind each name must lie a story of a person, of a family and of a tragic death. We set out to try and identify each of the men listed from The Great War and, in a small way, attempt to turn them into the real people that they were.
The men were of widely varying ages and often met their deaths in a variety of manners. Private Edward Victor Clissold of the Royal Sussex Regiment was 19, was the son of Edward and Alice Clissold and was brought up in the local police station at Didmarton in Somerset, where his father was the local constable. He was killed in action at the third Battle of Ypres (the Battle of Passchendaele)on 24th September 1917; he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial just outside Ypres. Corporal Albert Thomas Bailey was 46 and in the postal section of The Royal Engineers. His wife was Helen Bailey and they lived at 22 Goodrich Crescent Newport. After the war in 1919 he was a patient in Lord Derby’s War Hospital in Warrington, where he died from malaria on 17th September 1919; he is buried in St Mary’s churchyard in Newport.
Those listed on the memorial also fought in virtually all of the great battles in which the British Army were engaged. Rifleman James Albert Gray of the Monmouthshire Regiment died on 8th May 1915, when his battalion desperately held the line against German attacks during the Second Battle of Ypres; an action that became legendary within Welsh regimental histories and is commemorated in the painting in the main reception of Newport Civic Centre. Private William Knight of the Welsh Regiment was born in Somerset and lived in New Tredegar. He was killed on 10th July 1916 where his battalion had been moved up to Mametz Wood in order to take part in the famous assault by the Welsh Division during The Battle of The Somme, now marked by the much visited Mametz Welsh Dragon memorial. Private Knight has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. Private George Shakesheff of the South Wales Borderers was born in Ledbury and lived in Newport. His younger brother Harry had joined the army in 1911 and George died on 19th June 1915 at Gallipoli.
All of these men must have demonstrated the highest courage and two received some of the highest awards for bravery. Lance Corporal Ieuan Phillips was 23 and in the Royal Army Medical Corps. His father was a colliery foreman and he lived at the Post Office at Six Bells in Abertillery, where his cousin was post mistress. He died on 1st September 1918, when the tide of war had turned decisively against the Germans, and was awarded the Military Medal. Sergeant Harold Hawkins lived at 96 Victoria Avenue Maindee and was in the Royal Engineers, 1st Monmouthshire Seige Company. He died of gas poisoning on 23 October 1918. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal and is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery.
A number of men died tragically close to the end of the war. David Finn died of wounds as a prisoner of war in Germany on 31st October 1918, eleven days before the end of the war and is buried in Niederzwehren Cemetery. He was born in Kinsale, County Cork and enlisted in Newport into the Royal Munster Fusiliers. However, Private Finn does not represent the most far flung origins of those commemorated. Sapper Ivor Ginello was married and lived at 20 Dudley Street Newport. As a child Ivor lived at 20 Victoria Road Llantarnam, the son of John Geneloer, who was an Italian immigrant, and Charlotte who was born in Leicester. He too died on 31st October 1918 and is buried at Awoingt British Cemetery.
In writing this piece we hoped that we might remind present generations of the enormous sacrifice made by an earlier generation, encourage an interest in local history and perhaps encourage an interest in the thousands of names on similar memorials throughout the local area. The families of many of the men listed on the Post Office Memorial must still live within the Newport and Gwent area. We very much hope that they will come forward to provide further details about their lives, perhaps provide photographs and give these men their place in the story of our past.
